Meet Kaosarat – A Young Mother with Dreams of a Better Future

At 23, Kaosarat’s dreams were paused when she became a mom in SS3. With no support, she’s raising her child alone, but she hasn’t given up. She dreams of going back to school and building a better future. Read her story below.

Please note: During this interview, Kaosarat responded in Yoruba while the interviewer spoke in English. Her responses have been translated into English for clarity.

Interviewer: Hello, how are you, sister? Can you tell us about yourself?

Kaosarat: My name is Abdulwahab Kaosarat. I’m 23 years old.

Interviewer: Thank you, Kaosarat. I see you have a little one with you, such a beautiful baby. Can you tell us about your current situation?

Kaosarat: I got pregnant while I was in SS3. Since then, life has been really tough. There has been no money to eat, take care of myself, or support my child.

Interviewer: She explained that her family couldn’t afford to send her back to school after she got pregnant, and they’ve struggled financially since then.

Are you interested in returning to school?

Kaosarat: Yes, I would like to go back to school.

Interviewer: Why do you want to go back?

Kaosarat: Because I’m always at home with nothing to do. I don’t have a job or any source of income. I just sit at home, watching over my baby.

Interviewer: What would you like to study if given the opportunity?

Kaosarat: Mass Communication.

Interviewer: That’s wonderful! If you were given the opportunity to learn a skill or go back to school, would you take it seriously?

Kaosarat: Yes, I would. I would do everything I can to help myself. I would stay focused, study hard, and take it seriously.

Interviewer: What class did you stop at?

Kaosarat: SS3.

Interviewer: Why didn’t you return to school after giving birth?

Kaosarat: It was due to financial challenges. There was no money to go back to school.

Interviewer: What are your plans for your daughter?

Kaosarat: I want to give her a good education.

Interviewer: That’s a great dream. Will you also be committed to your own education?

Kaosarat: Yes, I will.

Interviewer: At St. Magdalen Institute, our mission is to support young mothers like you, to help you regain your footing, build a future for yourself, and create a better life for your child. You are not alone.

Do you know the whereabouts of your child’s father?

Kaosarat: No, I don’t know where he is.

Interviewer: That’s okay. St. Magdalen Institute is here for you. Thank you so much for sharing your story with us, Kaosarat. We are proud of your courage and determination, and we will be here to support you every step of the way.
