“I just want my son to be more educated than I am” Yesirat, Age 20

Abandoned by the father of her child and with no family support, Yesirat found herself alone, pregnant, and homeless at just 18. She had to drop out of school in SS2, and survival became her only focus.

But even in the midst of hardship, Yesirat holds onto one dream, for her son to have the opportunities she never had. She may not wish to return to school herself, but she is eager to learn a vocation, stay focused, and build a future where she can support her child with dignity.

Interviewer: Good afternoon. Please tell us your name and how old you are. Yesirat: My name is Tejudeen Yesirat, and I’m 20 years old.

Interviewer: Can you share your current situation with us?

Yesirat: The father of my child abandoned us after I gave birth. Since then, I’ve been struggling and begging just to survive.

Interviewer: Did you try to contact him or any of his family members?

Yesirat: No, I don’t know any of his relatives.

Interviewer: What level did you stop in school?

Yesirat: I stopped at SS2.

Interviewer: Why didn’t you return to school after giving birth?

Yesirat: I didn’t have the opportunity to go back. I have no one to support me.

Interviewer: Are you interested in going back to school?

Yesirat: No, sir.

Interviewer: If you had the opportunity to learn a skill or vocation, would you be interested?

Yesirat: Yes, sir. I would.

Interviewer: And how would you use that opportunity to help yourself?

Yesirat: I’ll stay focused on my vocation and avoid distractions, so I can take care of my child.

Interviewer: What are your hopes for your son?

I want him to be well educated, much more than I am, so he can stand confidently among the elites.
